The role of a Special Needs counselor is invariably challenging and requires hard work, but it will also be the most rewarding and fulfilling summer of your life.

For most campers, the time spent at summer camp is the highlight of their year, and for those with Special Needs this is no different. Summer camps for people with special needs provide a haven for campers and their families to take a break from their daily routine. As a special needs counselor, your role will have a hugely positive impact on the lives of campers and their families.

Special needs camps cater to a variety of campers, children and adults alike. Each campers’ individual needs will vary based on the severity of their disability or health concern(s). Most camps for campers with special needs will have an extensive orientation and training period, where all this is discussed in depth so you will be prepared for your summer.

Who do special needs camps cater for?

Camps for persons with special needs cater to a variety of abilities and disabilities:

* Physical (including), but not limited to: Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Cord Injuries, Traumatic Brain Injuries/Strokes, burns, and vision or hearing impairments.
* Cognitive (including, but not limited to): Intellectual disabilities, Autism and Down Syndrome.
* Emotional (including, but not limited to): ADD/ADHD and mental illness.
* Health Concerns (including, but not limited to): diabetes, HIV/AIDS, brittle bones, food allergies, and breathing concerns.

What positions are available?

Camps, which cater for persons with special needs, require both general and activity counselors like any other camps. The camper to counselor ratio at these camps is usually 1:1 or 2:1. You may work closely with one particular camper or a small group of campers each session. Counselors will be required to assist campers in day-to-day activities and/or lead activities at camp. In addition, you may be required to assist some campers in their daily routine such as washing, bathing, eating, and getting around camp.

Do I need to have previous experience?

Previous experience is great but not required. All camps for persons with special needs will provide a1-2 week training session prior to the arrival of the campers. What we are ideally looking for is people, who are willing to work hard at providing a comforting, fun and supportive environment for their campers and who can smile even in the most challenging of situations.
