Company : Oyster Worldwide
Activities : Gap year / Career break / Medical, Health, Medicine / Animal Volunteer Projects / Community Projects
Countries : Jordan
This is a new opportunity to use your veterinary skills to help animals in Jordan - a land of ancient history, dramatic deserts and the famous, unique Dead Sea.
Vets needed in Amman
Jordan is an exciting place to visit, steeped in history with striking scenery including rose-coloured deserts, mountains and gorges. This is the land of ancient faithes, Roman emperors and Lawrence of Arabia. You’ll find the landscape peppered with desert castles and old settlements. Amman, the capital, still keeps that sense of history but embraces the best of modern life too.
Oyster is involved with an ambitious project just outside the centre of Amman, which aims to improve the lives of local animals (domestic, working or stray). Its two-pronged approach offers care and treatment for suffering animals, as well as trying to influence better treatment and care of animals
At the centre of the project is a new, state of the art veterinary hospital, one of the most up to date in the Middle East . As the country becomes more aware of animal welfare a shortage of veterinary skills is becoming evident and they are very short of qualified vets (and student vets) to help them in their work, both in the hospital and in the surrounding villages.
What will I be doing?
You will join a team of 2 vets and 15 lay people at the veterinary hospital. The animals and procedures will be familiar, so you will be able to apply your knowledge straight away and will quickly become a valued member of the team, but in a culture very different to that in the UK. We are confident you will gain from this experience and it will enhance your CV.
You will be given responsibility for a range of routine operations, including spay and neuter and a range of injuries. You could also help with the centre’s mobile clinic, visiting villages and seeing parts of Jordan that the tourists never get to.
There might also be opportunities to help at another clinic dealing with wild animals such as lions and hyenas.
1 - 3 months
All year round
1 month = £1495. Extra months = £295
Includes flights, transfer, accommodation, transport to and from Amman to the vet hospital, Dead Sea trip and full support throughout
