Malawi has not yet celebrated 70 years of excellence in Education. So many children attend school but many of these kids do not complete secondary and even primary education due to a number of reasons;
* Lack of support from parents as some parents are not able to help their kids academically at home for most of them did not attend school.
* Lack of financial assistance. They do not have money for the purchase of exercise books, text books and or other learning materials. This has become a major factor due to loss of parents through death because of HIV/AIDS, malaria and also other illnesses.
* Lack of government support in the education sector as most schools in the villages or towns do not have libraries, well trained staff and enough resources needed for the development of education in this country.
Malawi is one of Africa's poorest countries and volunteer help is in desperate need. There are many attractions pulling volunteers to Malawi, including Lake Malawi with the opportunity for Scuba Diving and sun bathing.
Why The Need For Volunteers?
Education is seen as a privilege in Malawi and was reserved until recently for the wealthy families. In recent years schools have in theory been made free, however they still need funding to survive and consequently have asked for scholar subscriptions. This is why it is essential for volunteers to help within these schools, to give kids the opportunity to learn and to gain the education they deserve.
Volunteer Activities
We are looking for volunteer teachers who will help with the running of the school in class as well as in its offices. We are in need of volunteers in the secondary and primary department.
When at the school, the volunteers will be working together with all members of staff as one family in the planning of daily and monthly activities. We strongly believe that with the involvement of the volunteers, there will be sharing of knowledge and resources and we know the difference your expertise and experience will make to the school.
The Required Skills
When teaching in Malawi, your primary and main role will be to teach English to the kids. Sub Saharan encourages extracurricular activities usually proving to be extremely popular at the school, in particular sports and activities that raise awareness of environmental issues in relation to the communities.
Local Facilities
The school is based on the outskirts of Lilongwe city. Lilongwe is the second largest city in Malawi but is in fact the capital. Lilongwe had good transport connections with minivans covering all areas of the city. Long Distance buses run from Lilongwe to destinations in East Africa and there are plenty of taxis. As most other developed cities in Africa, Lilongwe has numerous banks, supermarkets, foreign exchange and post offices.
Trip Highlights
To work with under privileged children, to visit the 'Warm Heart of Africa' and to visit the ancient Lake Malawi and its stunning beaches. For the adventurers among you there are many mountains to climb in the south of Malawi, most notably Mt Mulanje which is very popular with many tourists.
No duration restrictions
Any time throughout the year
Must be over 18 years of age & have a valid passport which must be valid for at least 6 months upon departure from your project country.
