There are many ways volunteers are excelling in these areas by using their enthusiasm and experience to help change the lives of the children they are teaching.
Although the Kenyan Government have made education free in the country there is still a lack in resources and therefore schools are asking students for money to help support the teachers. Many of these schools are based in poor, deprived areas of the city and require urgent assistance from volunteers.
Why The Need For Volunteers?
This would be very suitable for volunteers who want to teach and are able to leave in very harsh areas as the place is a hardship area with temperatures that go up to 45°c. It would also suit volunteers who would like to counsel these kids using art and craft as a tool. Volunteers who are also interested in understanding the plight of Nomadic tribes of Africa and refugees but must also be willing to interact with the children by teaching.
Volunteer Activities
Volunteers will embark on teaching the children in the school a range of subjects including; English, Maths, Science, History & Geography. As a lot of the children's families cannot afford food, the school provides a feeding program which volunteers will be able to participate in. This happens for lunch and occasionally after school for some children aswel. Volunteers are also given the opportunity to work with the children participating in extracurricular activities. This can include a range of games from football to dodge ball or alternatively teaching the children various arts and crafts, first aid and scouting. This project gives the volunteer many great opportunities to work with the children on a variety of different levels.
The Required Skills
When teaching in Kenya, your primary and main role will be to teach English to the kids. Sub Saharan encourages extracurricular activities usually proving extremely popular at the school, in particular sports and activities to raise awareness of environmental issues in relation to the communities.
Local Facilities
Kakuma is a very remote town located in the Turkana district of Northern Kenya. There are very few facilities available to volunteers because of its remote location. All the necessities and essentials are located within the town but for most extra goods volunteers will need to catch the public transport to Lodwar which is the closest largest town within the area.
