Although the Kenyan Government have made education free in the country their is still a lack of resources and therefore schools are asking students for money to help support the teachers.
There are many ways volunteers are excelling in these areas by using their enthusiasm and experience to help change the lives of the children they are teaching. Many of these schools are based in poor, deprived areas of the city and require urgent assistance from volunteers.
Why The Needs Of Volunteers?
Education is seen as a privilege in Kenya and was reserved until recently for the wealthy families. In recent years school as in theory been made free, however schools still need funding to survive and consequently have asked for scholar subscriptions. This is why it is essential for volunteers to help within these schools, to give kids the opportunity to learn and to gain an education they deserve.
Volunteers Activities
There are a wide range of activities for volunteers to participate in whilst at schools in Mombasa. You will be taking part teaching various subjects including;
* Mathematics
* Science
* Physical Education
* Arts & Crafts
Some of the schools also double as the children homes enabling you to spend time with the kids at home and helping out with the daily activities in their care homes. This is a good time to use your initiative and create games and activities to play with the children and get them to interact much more with you. You will also be able to try your hand at a bit of cooking for all the children. These children are amazing and is it not uncommon for volunteers to find themselves getting withdrawal symptoms when they leave the project at weekends.

Sub Saharan encourages extra curricular activities which usually prove extremely popular at the school, in particular sports and activities to raise awareness of environmental issues in relation to the communities.
