Info

Together with one of Kenya's game reserves we are offering volunteers the chance to carry out research not only of the park but also of the wild animals that live within it.

Ever Wanted To Spend Time With The Wild Animals Of Africa?
The conservancy offers monitoring programs where volunteers will be able to spend a few hours a day monitoring Africa's wildlife as well as monitoring and creating ways to help minimise the human/animal conflict that is taking place between the local communties and the animals.

Why The Needs Of Volunteers?
Volunteers are needed on this project to work with a local research team to help divise and implement methods of control over the animals roaming the area. There is a human/animal conflict in this area and the research team with the help of our volunteers and looking to find a solution. Volunteers are also need to monitor the wild animals, especially elephants by using cameras and tracking them.

Volunteers Activities
Your work in the conservancy will include working with the research team to help counteract the human/animal conflict that is going on. You will be able to travel with the research team to waterholes to set up cameras to watch the elephants and any other animal that visits it and if they encounter any problems with the communities living close by. You will also monitor the elephants movements by tracking them and see where the migratory roots are. Volunteers and researchers are also able to help with the maintenence of the park fence by repairing it if it has been damaged by elephants trying to pass by (this is very common). You are also required to visit the surrounding communities to find out the problems they are facing and ways in which they feel will end the animal invasions.

Your monitoring work will also consist of compiling pictures of elephants to track which herds are travelling where and for how long and coming up with ways in which their migratory patterns can be altered to benefit the local people. You are given the chance to make paper from elephant dung which is something very unique and definetly worth a go.

The Required Skills
You will need to be hard working and have a love for animals. You need to be committed to your placement and embrace the local community. You will require patience and good entrepreneurial skills along with good initiative. You are sometimes required to work long days so you must prepare for this.

Local Facilities
You will be located on site within the reserve, everything you need as your day to day requirements will be available to you on site. The conservancy is located in between Voi & Mombasa where you will be able to travel when you are not working. Mombasa has all of the service you will need such as supermarkets and banks

Trip Highlights
You will gain the unique opportunity to work with wild animals including the Big 5 & the chance to experience Kenya's wild side. Volunteers are situated in Kasigau which is not to far from the coastal city of Mombasa and it's tropical beaches.
