If you are a qualified nurse or doctor or even learning medicine this is a great project for you. Working in a busy hospital in the town of Morogoro located some 200kms west of Dar es Salaam.
The hospital is always on the look out for people willing to give help and to offer their expertise. This hospital also gives volunteers the opportunity to work more hands on as their is not all the equipment there you might be used to. It also gives you an opportunity to show your knowledge and skills to the local doctors and nurses to compare which methods of treatment seem to be most effective.
Why The Needs Of Volunteers?
The hospital is not very well funded and therefore lacks appropriate equipment and also staffing levels are sometimes effected due to non salary payments. The hospital thrives on volunteers coming to help as they benefit greatly. They are in constant demand for volunteers to meet the needs of the hospital in supplying care and treatment for the 50-60 patients that arrive everyday.
Volunteers Activities
This placement is suitable for volunteers who wish to develop their carrier in the medical profession. The placement is sure to provide numerous opportunities to work with patients. All activities at the centre are related to working with patients and supporting doctors and nurses. Usually, volunteers will be involved in following activities:
Volunteers with a medical degree:
* Helping doctors and nurses
* Visiting patients
* Providing medicine
* Taking blood sample
* General treatment of patient
* Testing blood sample
Volunteers without a medical degree: Most of the activities will be observation based. Volunteers will also be assisting the nurses within the maternity ward and with administration work
* Assisting nurses and doctors (keeping records)
* Taking blood pressure
* Proving medicine at the wards
The Required Skills
Qualified nurses, doctors and medical students need apply. You must have at least some knowledge of the medical profession to be allowed to work with the patients. The more qualified you are the more work you will be able to do at the hospital.
Local Facilities
The project is situated in the town of Morogoro. It has all amenities you need including banks, post offices and supermarkets, cinemas & many more recreational activities. There is a good transport network of local minivans (Daladala’s) as they are locally known, buses and plenty of taxis.
Trip Highlights
Morogoro is the vibrant region of on the southern side of Dar es Salaam. During the weekends volunteers can visit the Ulugulu mountains & Mikumi national park which is only 80kms from Morogoro town. A popular choice with volunteers is the Selous Game Reserve which is some 250kms to the south of Morogoro.
