Our partners in Benin serve the poorest and most vulnerable people in Ouidah. They are continually striving to improve their work, and volunteers help make that happen. Community Development refers to activities that help build capacity and create the building blocks for lasting change. It encompasses a wide variety of tasks. We are partnered with several host organizations which focus on orphans and vulnerable children, rural development, agriculture, public health, and more. Therefore, if you would like further info on with whom you will be placed, please specify this in your application.
Your Role
In this position, you will assist in an administrative manner, and learn key skills relevant to capacity building and community development from a local perspective. There is a wide variety of tasks to be completed, which will depend on local need, as well as your skills and background.
Examples of Activities:
Write grant proposals
Create or add to written materials (for marketing purposes)
Assist local staff in implementing extra-curricular activities
Translate documents from French to English
Prepare reports
Research and develop partnerships with national and international agencies
Create, edit, or maintain website
Train local staff in website maintenance and/or social media
Language Requirement: None.
Typical Volunteer Hours: Typically you will work 9am-5pm in this position. You can take long weekends to travel and explore Benin, just let your supervisor know in advance. The work schedule tends to be more casual, and you may get involved on the weekends too. While generally volunteers are involved in a typical workday alongside local staff and volunteers, we know that you are volunteering your valuable time. Therefore, if you would like to volunteer for less hours, this is ok. You can arrange this with your supervisor once in Benin. In sum, your schedule can be flexible, you just need to ensure you communicate the schedule you would like to have with your supervisor.
