Christ the Redeemer & Sugar Loaf Mountain, Copacobana & Ipanema beaches, Brazil's colourful people and exotic flora and fauna... all undeniably perfect photographic subjects. Rio is a menagerie of colours, flavours and LIFE. The enormous contrast between the lives of the rich and poor makes it a fantastic place to capture a real cross section of humanity, and explore how people live in our world. Set your imagination loose!!

Courses are available at beginner, intermediate & advanced levels to cater for any kind of student. However, the full time course is currently only available at beginners level. No specific qualifications or experience are needed at any level. You can also take all three courses together in a 6 week course to take advantage of a special, discounted price.

ABOUT THE COURSE:

Courses run throughout the year - as you'll be working 1-1 with your tutor (a unique experience!) the course can run at any time. All lessons are taught in English and all course materials are in English.

You will have lessons 2 or 3 times per week. The lessons will all take place during the week, to allow you the weekends for sightseeing and travel with your fellow students and other volunteers!

You’ll be taught using videos, slides, enlarged photographs and your course book. You’ll also have access to all the different cameras and studio equipment at the centre. Most students will work with both digital and film cameras.

On the course, you will cover a variety of skills and ideas and have the opportunity to put them into practice in beautiful Rio de Janeiro! For example, the basic course covers:

► How to use digital and film cameras
► Technical skills including composition, lighting & colour usage, flash techniques, exposure and filters
► Practical studio photography, including portraits and still life
► Practical outdoor photography
► A visit to a professional studio

If you are interested in another area of photography, we can sometimes organize a course in this area - just ask! If you are a group, and would like us to tailor a course for you in a particular area, this is also possible.

Our courses are all practical, and most of them include the opportunity to take photographs outdoors.

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHY CENTRE:

The Photography Centre we work with is the oldest and traditional photo school in Rio de Janeiro. It's a non-profit institution which was founded in 1951 and aims to stimulate and advertise the art of photography. The centre fulfils this mission by organizing indoor and outdoor photography courses, seminars, workshops & expositions and photo projections. It also teaches photography courses to everyone from beginners to professionals who want to improve their skills. The photography centre is located around 15-20 minutes from your accommodation on public transport.

ABOUT RIO DE JANEIRO:

The colourful city of Rio, jammed between miles of coastline and mountains, is regarded as one of the world’s greatest and most beautiful cities in the world. It pulses with life and deserves its reputation as Cidade Maravilhosa (Wonderful City). The inhabitants of Rio, known locally as Carioca’s, pursue pleasure like no other people, fully utilizing their impressive beaches with beautiful people, samba, ice cold beers and the local firewater, cachaça!

► Can you describe a typical day? I wake up at 8.00 AM, eat breakfast at the hostel (which is good; fruit and good coffee) then I take the metro to my photography course. The course is very intense as I have one-on-one lessons, I learn a lot! I'm done at 12.00. Then I take out my Rio guidebook and I explore the city and its sights. I normally return to the hostel at 18.00 to eat with the others and chill out.

Costs / Benefits

Costs vary depending on length of placement, but starts at £1045 for two weeks. You can participate for up to one year, subject to visa requirements.
Included is full support from the moment of booking and throughout your placement to your return home. There are support staff 24/7 in all our destinations worldwide and a 24 hour emergency international telephone line direct to the Head Office. All meals are provided, unless otherwise stated. Accommodation is provided (whether a rented house, a hotel/hostel, homestay, apartment or flat).
You’ll be met at the nearest airport on your arrival by our in-country manager who will take you to your accommodation and give you a full induction into the area. He/she will also be on call 24/7 and you’ll see them frequently.
Pre-departure you’ll receive comprehensive information about every aspect of your placement and necessary preparations, ranging from what to pack, to visa information, to what to do on your weekend travel in the country. Your safety, well being and happiness throughout your placement are our primary concerns and we will keep in touch with you throughout. International flights not included.

Requirements

No qualifications or previous experience are necessary, just a good dose of enthusiasm! Everyone is welcome on a Travellers programme, whether gap year, undergraduate, on a career break - or even retired! From 17 years old upwards, and all nationalities. This placement would suit anyone who wants to make a real difference, wants first-hand experience of a different culture and has initiative.
