This is a Summer project Travellers has set up to give the kids something to do in the holidays that’s fun and won't cost them a penny. The idea is to keep them entertained and teach them some skills simultaneously.
COME TO GHANA AND HAVE FUN WITH THE KIDS.
Turn their school holidays into an enjoyable learning experience at a Travellers Summer Camp that is free for the children.
Children in Ghana have school holidays during from the beginning of August until the middle of September. Unfortunately many of the children come from poor families and have little scope to entertain themselves during the Summer holiday.
So if you've got nothing planned, and you have anything from a couple a weeks or longer free in the summer, why not come to Ghana and have fun with the kids!
WHAT YOU'LL GAIN FROM DOING THIS PROJECT:
► An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into Latin America.
► New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.
► An entry on your CV or résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market
► The enormous satisfaction of helping disadvantaged children and knowing that you made a difference to them
► And best of all ... an unforgettable experience!
LOCATION:
The Summer Fun School will take place in the grounds of one of the local schools in Kwabenya and will be for children from all around the area, including other schools in the community. Kwabenya is a small town/suburb about forty minutes drive outside Accra city centre and a place where many of our teaching volunteers are based.
WHAT'S INCLUDED:
One of the obvious activities will be sports - as many varied sports as possible - plus various other children's activities, such as:
► Any ball games, like Football, Cricket, Basketball, Rounders or Netball
► Frisbee games
► Dancing - Ghanaians love to dance, so putting together a dance concert or dance competition would be fun
► Drama - Informal Drama productions is another activity that can be initiated - and all kids love play-acting!
► Music - teaching them to sing, to play an instrument and perhaps to put together a concert to be performed at the end of the holidays
► Magic tricks, juggling or circus-type activities
► Simple games like hopscotch, skipping, hula-hoops.
► Arts and Crafts
► Any creative activities, like face painting
► Reading from story books
► Or anything else your imagination can dream up that will amuse the children.
Plus the kids will be learning to use English at the same time, so they'll not only have fun, they'll also benefit from the activity. These activities will also benefit the children by improving their team-work skills, social interaction and building their confidence. You may work for only a few hours a day, or you may find that you want to devote more time to the children.
The school will remain open during the holidays because they are also running extra-curricular academic lessons for the children who need them.
You will be left very much to your own devices, therefore being creative is very much a
must. You may work with large or small groups of children, so you need to be diverse and organised, but you are encouraged to utilise any skills or passions you have, whether these are playing sport, music, drama or just games. You’ll be rewarded by how much fun the children will have!
ACCOMMODATION:
Accommodation will vary, depending on your work location. You may live in comfortable guest house accommodation, but you will most likely live with a host family. This means that you get to eat, sleep, work, socialise and generally live like a Ghanaian. Local family stays enable you to fully experience the local culture from the inside.
Many of our volunteers remain friends with their host families long after they leave Ghana and in some cases they return to the country later especially to visit their family. Sometimes members of their Ghanaian family have even gone to visit them in their home country.
Travellers' placements are very flexible and you can combine this project with any other Travellers project, either in the same country or in different countries.

It’s as easy as that.
The Summer Camp runs for 4 weeks, but you can choose how long you'd like to participate for. You have the choice of volunteering from 2 week to 4 weeks.
This project is all the more important as the children only get one chance a year to attend! The project runs between approximately 10 August and 10 September annually and can be combined with another project before or after this one.
Costs vary depending on the length of your project, but start at £845, for 2 weeks. You are able to combine multiple projects and participate for up to one year, subject to visa requirements.
Included is full support from the moment of booking and throughout your placement to your return home. There are support staff 24/7 in all our destinations worldwide and a 24 hour emergency international telephone line direct to the Head Office. All meals are provided, unless otherwise stated. Accommodation is provided (whether a rented house, a hotel/hostel, homestay, apartment or flat).
You’ll be met at the nearest airport on your arrival by our in-country manager who will take you to your accommodation and give you a full induction into the area. He/she will also be on call 24/7 and you’ll see them frequently.
Pre-departure you’ll receive comprehensive information about every aspect of your placement and necessary preparations, ranging from what to pack, to visa information, to what to do on your weekend travel in the country. Your safety, well being and happiness throughout your placement are our primary concerns and we will keep in touch with you throughout. International flights not included.
No qualifications or previous experience are necessary, just a good dose of enthusiasm! Everyone is welcome on a Travellers programme, whether gap year, undergraduate, on a career break - or even retired! From 17 years old upwards, and all nationalities. This placement would suit anyone who wants to make a real difference, wants first-hand experience of a different culture and has initiative.
