If you feel more at home on a pitch than in a classroom and want to make a difference to underprivileged children, volunteer and share your passion with enthusiastic children under the sunny skies of South Africa!
This Coaching project is based in Cape Town, working with township children from underprivileged communities. You don't need any qualifications to coach on this project and we provide you with free coaching manuals to help you make the most of your placement.
LOCATION:
Cape Town has everything to offer with its stunning beaches, great surf, penguins, great nightlife and of course Table Mountain! You must go to the top of the mountain ... If you don't fancy climbing it, there is a cable car to take you up in comfort. The city is permanently in the Top Five Tourist Destinations in the World, and deservedly so. It's beautiful, fascinating, and exciting.
WHAT YOU'LL GAIN FROM DOING THIS PROJECT:
► An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into real Africa.
► The enormous satisfaction of helping disadvantaged children and knowing that you made a difference to them.
► New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.
► An entry on your CV or Résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market.
► And best of all ...an unforgettable experience!
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
In the school we work with, there are approximately 600 children, with 20 teachers. There are usually around 28 to 30 children in a class, but sometimes classes will be split into smaller groups when you are coaching. You'll most likely work with children who range in age from 5 to 13.
English is not the children's mother tongue, but the general standard is about Fair to Good. 98% of the children at the school come from Cape Town’s townships. Why not combine your sports project with the upcoming 2010 Football World Cup in Cape Town and be in the middle of World Cup fever!
The school has fairly good sports facilities with a football field, basketball and netball courts, indoor hall which can be used for sport, and cricket nets. The school is also situated close to an outdoor swimming pool where swimming volunteers will be coaching the children.
As a Travellers Sports volunteer you will be coaching your sport or a number of sports depending on your choice for around 4 - 5 hours a day. As Physical Education is now part of the curriculum in South Africa, lessons take place during life orientation classes.
Many of the teachers don't have any training or knowledge of sports coaching, so you'll be taking most of the sports lessons. You may be coaching on your own, or possibly with other volunteers, you may even have a teacher to help you, if so you can also teach the teacher how to coach a particular sport so that hopefully they can actually confidently take a sports lesson themselves.
TYPES OF SPORTS AVAILABLE TO COACH AND PLAY:
As a Travellers Sports Coach in Cape Town, you might find yourself involved in any number of sports like these below:
► Athletics
► Basketball,
► Cricket
► Football/Soccer
► Hockey
► Netball
► Rugby
► Swimming
► Volleyball
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO WHILE ON THIS PROJECT:
• A 5- or 7-day Safari from Cape Town up the renowned Garden Route, taking in Dolphin and Whale Spotting, visits to many tourist attractions, such as a visit to a brewery(!), the Bloukrantz Bungy Jump (reportedly the highest in the world), and a guided tour of the Cango Caves
• Surfing Courses: In the buzz city of Durban.
• Paragliding Course: Soar over the impressively beautiful Drakensburg Mountain. You'll get a licence at the end of the course which qualifies you to do solo paragliding around the world.
• 5-Day Bush Survival Course: This is a fantastic experience and opportunity to see lots of wild animals in their native habitats in Game Reserves. You'll learn a lot and you'll really enjoy learning some bush skills in the great outdoors!
