This course is ideal for those wanting to start a new career as a Game Ranger or Field Guide, or for the adventurous traveller looking for a totally new learning experience.
We are now offering FGASA level 1 Field Guide training in the stunning Balule Nature Reserve in South Africa. Many of our past conservation volunteers also take part in level 1 game ranger training as their 'next step' in their journey through Africa.
This course will teach you about some of the smallest to some of the biggest objects of our universe and many other subjects in between. The reserve is home to a variety of African wildlife, such as Lion, herds of Elephant (who regularly visit the watering hole outside the centre Kudu, Giraffe and waterhog.
What will I do?
The course follows the syllabus set our by FGASA (Field Guide Association of Southern Africa). The subjects covered are diverse covering subjects such as;
Astronomy
Geology
Fauna and Flora
Mammals
Reptiles
Fish
Birds
Climate
Animal Behaviour
Most of your training is done on foot and you will start your mornings with a 2-3 hour walk within the reserve. Emphasis is placed on practical guiding techniques, as well as theoretical training. Although endorsed at level 1 standard, the depth of knowledge taught will be between level 2 and level 3.
The course also includs a level1&2 First Aid course which is required to complete your FGASA level 1 training.
There is a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 8 students at any one time to ensure you are given as much one on one guidance that you will need to complete the Field Guide course at level 1.
Your teacher and Guide
Your teacher, Ian has been involved in wildlife conservation for over 20 years. He is qualified as a Special Knowledge and Skills - Dangerous Animals Guide SKS(DA) with FGASA and has also passed the SKS birding exam.
Where do I stay?
The reserve is 30 kms from Phalaborwa. Accommodation within the reserve is semi luxurious with airconditioned lecture room, lounge area, open plan kitchen and dining room and small swimming pool where you can relax at the end of the day.
The world famous Kruger National Park is only a short distance away and students will be able to reap the benefits and experiences from a weekend visit on their time off.
How much does is cost?
SA citizens: £1599 All other nationalities: £1899
Minimum age is 17. Students must have a full driving licence and be competant in the English language
