Info

A conservation volunteer experience in South Africa, like no other. This project aims to address the persecution of leopards by establishing rescue, rehabilitation, release and research project.

Leopards are considered by some farmers, to be a threat to their livelihoods, as they hunt and kill their livestock. Because of this, leopards and other predators are hunted or unintentionally caught in illegal gin traps and snares.

What will I do?

As a leopard research volunteer you may be involved in;

* Leopard tracking
* Live trap maintenance
* Camera trap maintenance
* Identifying the cause of livestock losses
* Collaring Leopards
* Analysing data and mapping
* Camping out in the bush
* Monitoring Antolian Guard Dogs
* Hiking
* Spoor analysis
* Flight over Baviaans Region to track collared leopards

All work is carried out in the wild in the Baviaanskloof and you will do a great deal of travelling in and around the area. Due to the the elusive and unpredictable nature of leopards, it must be accepted that the capturing and visual sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Only two will be allowed on the project at anyone time, to ensure a hands on approach, whilst making a difference.

To date we have saved 15 leopards, all of which have been succesfully released into the wild. Eight of these leopards have been collared and are being closely monitored on a daily basis.

Where do I stay?

Volunteers will live in Port Elizabeth, with their co-ordinator, Jeannine, when not in the Baviaanskloof. The four bedroomed home offers a fully equipped kitchen, spacious entertainment area and internet access. You will also experience camping in the Baviaanskloof area, living in a fully equipped, comfortable cave!! All equipment will be provided. Food will be provided for volunteers and student co-ordinators to cook on a rotational basis.
