Rwanda Gap Year Safaris

Plan a gap year in Rwanda. Rwanda encompasses in microcosm much of the beauty, wildness and variety of the central African continent. Its high volcanoes, sparkling lakes, game parks and lush tropical forests provide an everchanging sense of adventure and memorable impressions. A land of contrasts, Rwanda is the most densely populated country in all of Africa.

A tiny landlocked republic in Equatorial Africa, Rwanda lies on the eastern rim of the Albertine Rift and the watershed between Africa’s two largest river systems: the Nile and the Congo. Often called the “land of a thousand hills”, Rwanda is a mountainous country with a moist, temperate year-round climate.

Rwanda is the most densely populated country in Africa. French, English and Kinyarwanda are the most widely spoken languages and the population of about 8 million people is largely Christian with some Muslim and Animist communities.

Volcanoes National Park

The Virunga Mountains, a group of five dormant volcanoes, dominate the extreme northwest portion of Rwanda. Encompassing some 30,000 acres, Volcanoes National Park provides sanctuary for the rare and endangered Mountain Gorilla. Only a few hundred mountain gorillas remain on Earth, and Rwanda’s Virunga Volcanoes offer an excellent opportunity to get up close to these amazing animals. Nurtured with single-minded devotion by Dian Fossey, this conservation area is now a successful example of wildlife management in Africa.

While the Mountain Gorilla is the most extraordinary and captivating attraction of the park, these upland forests are also home to the small forest elephant, yellow-backed and black-fronted duiker, forest hog and antelope. Bird life here is of particular interest since many species are rare and found only in this high mountainous region.

AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK

Surrounded by the gentle slopes of eastern Rwanda, its vast savannahs, plains, marshes and lakes are entirely consecrated to the preservation of wildlife. One can expect to see topi, zebra, elephant, hippo and crocodile.
