Take a gap year in Cambodia and volunteer. The summer is fast approaching. If you still haven't made any plans and are after an adventure, then Projects-Abroad can safely say that Cambodia should offer something for everyone. Based in the heart of South East Asia, you can volunteer there in a gap year, gap month or in a university vacation. Retired volunteers, families and career breakers also flock to projects in Cambodia every year too.
The volunteer projects are based in Phnom Penh where volunteers stay in apartments located close to the placements that you'll work at. Working with Cambodia's abandoned children is a large and important feature of our work in Cambodia. By teaching English as a foreign language in charity schools and orphanages in Phnom Penh, you can really add something to the curriculum and ensure that pupils are getting the attention they deserve in understaffed and overstretched institutions.
The same is true of our Care programmes in orphanages where volunteers are needed to provide support to children in one of Asia's poorest countries. Projects-Abroad work with victims of HIV/AIDS, as well as at centres for street children and centres for children with disabilities.
If you're fascinated in the history and culture of Cambodia, you can join the Khmer Project where you can take part in a variety of activities over the course of a month where your supervisor will give you a unique insight into Cambodian life and its people. You'll visit prominent sites like the National Museum and the Killing Fields. You'll take part in observational and practical sessions including puppet-making, cooking lessons, copper moulding workshop as well as traditional music and dance classes.
What past Projects-Abroad Volunteers had to say:
"Cambodia is a country that I grew very fond of, and although you may have to look a bit deeper to find it, it is truly beautiful and the people are amazing and friendly especially considering all they have been through in the past."
(Gemma Morgan, Care)
"It struck me from my first day that the carers, cooks, teachers, even the security guards, were all a part of helping the children and loving them like their own. The staff gain just as much as the children do from volunteers, they learn to improve their English and new songs and games to play when volunteers are not around."
(Yamini Patel, Teaching)
"On the Khmer project you're going to have the opportunity to see some of the colours, some of the sights and beauty of Cambodia, you'll witness some of the hardship that many people still endure and feel a lot of the warmth and pride that most Cambodians have for their country and those who visit."
(Gavin Alexander, Khmer Project)
"The diving is excellent and in my three months on the island I completed over 100 dives. The diving activities include seahorse surveys, reef surveys and reef clean-ups, all of which are planned and organised in a safe manner. Even if you have never dived before, you could not find a better place to learn with qualified, quality instructors who allow you to learn at your own pace."
(Simon Ferrier, Conservation & Environment)
