Gap Year Post-Summer Camp USA Travel Opportunities
Find gap year placements after working at a summer camp. The final day of Summer Camp USA is always a sad one. As you wave your final goodbyes to the kids and vow that you will see them again next summer, the sad reality that summer camp is over starts to sink in. However, it needn’t be all doom and gloom. Unlike the kids, you don’t have to go home yet!
One of the most exciting ways to spend your time off from the kids is to get together with some fellow camp counsellors and plan an American adventure for after camp. Your J-1 visa allows you to continue to explore the USA for a limited time after your camp contract ends and BUNAC have some top tips and gap year destinations for you to get excited about.
New York City
For most BUNACers on our Summer Camp USA programme, this is where you will be flying into and out from this summer. Featuring some of the most recognisable buildings in the world and a city atmosphere that is second to none, New York is worth more than just a gateway to the rest of America. Hop in one of those famous yellow cabs and head down to Times Square to marvel at the bright lights, before paying a trip to the newly-built Yankee Stadium to catch a game of America’s favourite pastime- baseball.
Top tip: Spend a few days in the city before you fly back home to the UK. Hostel beds get booked up quickly during the summer months so pre-book a couple of nights before your departure date so you’re not rushing from halfway across the United States to catch your flight!
Greyhound
The cheapest form of transport in the US is Greyhound buses which can take you all around the country and from city to city. Perfect for those on a budget and wanting to see as much of the States as they can before flying home, Greyhound are a reliable way of getting about. Great routes include New York to Niagara Falls ($70) and San Francisco to Los Angeles ($42) if you book in advance.
Top Tip: The Greyhound discovery pass allows you to travel anywhere in America and Canada for 7, 15, 30 or 60 days. You can go on any Greyhound bus at any time to any city on your pass and it’s a great way of ticking off the many amazing American cities.
