Take a gap year in Nepal. As the name suggests, the Backpack Project aims to supply bags and basic school supplies to children from poor families in and around the Kathmandu Valley and Chitwan district of Nepal. These simple yet highly necessary academic resources have proven essential in providing the stimulus needed to encourage children to do better at school.
WAVA has seven volunteer projects in Nepal - each one is run by the same organisation that oversees the Backpack Project. Last year, 134 children were supported by this initiative, and this year the number is set to increase to 180 children in three Orphanages in Kathmandu, as well as children from Jhuwani Blind Orphanage, and the Tharu community in Chitwan.
The annual Easter Sunday egg hunt kicks off the Backpack Project, and the local children truly look forward to the day's entertainment - it is also a great way for volunteers in the area to see how their help can go a long way in helping the children.
The initiative is funded solely by donations and the continued support of volunteers. Donations to the 2011 Backpack Project in Nepal are always appreciated - as little as €20.00 can provide the tools needed to inspire children to do better in school.
