Take a gap year in Africa and volunteer in Tanzania. Projects-Abroad don't always know what our ex-volunteers get up to up next. However, for one Australian ex-volunteer, we know exactly what she did after volunteering with Projects Abroad and we're helping her to do it! Wendy Tisdell volunteered in 2008 with Projects Abroad in Jamaica. She has now set up a charity called BrigIT Water Foundation. The aim of the charity is to provide safe, secure and sustainable water collection, storage and distribution systems to small and low key education, health and welfare organisations in developing countries.
BrigIT carry out their projects in a variety of carefully selected destinations and as part of the special relationship with Projects Abroad, volunteers are needed in order to help bring water to the local communities. This year BridgIT is returning to Tanzania to work with the Maasai people two hours north of Arusha. The team will work towards ensuring that the community, when it comes to water, is self-sufficient by setting up a rainwater harvesting system and providing extra water storage in the form of polyethylene Afritanks. Those benefiting in this remote Maasai community should include a primary school, secondary school, local health clinic and over fifty local households.
This will be the second year that we have worked on this project in Tanzania. Our work was recognised at the 2010 Digital Entrepreneur Awards where it won Community Project of the Year. Founder, Tisdell says: "As an ex volunteer with Projects Abroad, I know very well how volunteering in a developing country can affect your life in a profound way. Volunteering has the ability to leave an impression that forever changes your views on the world and life."
You could make an invaluable contribution to supporting this project by giving your time and energy to provide a sustainable water supply in a community that needs it.
