Gap Year Wildlife Volunteer Projects in Cameroon, Africa

Gap year volunteer work with animals in Africa. 2011 is a very special year for Ape Action Africa - it’s our 15th birthday! We’ve come a long way since we began life as Cameroon Wildlife AidFund (CWAF), focussed on improving the lives of the primates at Mvog Betsi Zoo in the capital,Yaounde. Before long we were taking in primates from all over the country - orphans of the illegal bushmeat and pet trades.

Ape Action Africa are incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved. Funded only by private supporters and staffed almost entirely by Cameroonians, we’ve worked hard to develop a forest-based sanctuary that cares for and protects over 320 primates.

In November last year Ape Action Africa experienced a sudden and terrible loss with the death of our Director Avi Sivan. We wish very much that he could share this special year with us, but are determined to continue our work in his memory and make our birthday year the best yet.

2011 is also the 10th birthday of Nkan Daniel, the gorilla who stole the heart of Rachel Hogan in 2001. She was about to leave for the UK when he arrived, then a 2-week old orphan and she stayed to hand rear him, pictured above at 8 months old. He is now approaching adulthood, weighs almost 100 kilos and leads a group of 10 other gorillas - testament to the great work of Rachel and our team. Ape Action Africa are planning lots more news and events in the months to come to mark our 15th year, a milestone we would not have achieved without Avi and Talila Sivan. We look forward to sharing the year with you!
