Ghana Gap Year Volunteer Responsible Travel Programs

Ghana Gap Year Volunteer Responsible Travel Programs

Whatcha Ghana do this summer? Take a gap year in Ghana and volunteer with BUNAC! With Ghana gap year programmes in HIV/Aids awareness, teaching and community development, there are plenty of ways that you can make a difference in this wonderful country.

Over the last few years, Ghana has become one of THE hotspots for responsible travel. BUNAC’s Volunteer Ghana programme has become increasingly popular with travellers wanting to combine the experience of travelling in this incredible country with making a genuinely worthwhile contribution to Ghana itself. Its amazing natural and cultural diversity has made Ghana a real travellers’ paradise - these are just some of the reasons why:

Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary

Black and white Colobus and Mona monkeys patrol this small sanctuary (and the surrounding Boabeng village), which was set up to protect them in accordance with the villagers’ cultural beliefs.

The Bui National Park

The Black Volta River flows through this spectacular national park, where local residents include the largest population of hippopotamus in Ghana.

Kakum National Park

Get up close and personal with Ghana’s beautiful virgin forest by taking a treetop canopy walk!

Accra’s Handicraft market

Locals flock to this market (the largest handicraft market in the country) to buy and sell all kinds of arts and crafts. Wood carvings, musical instruments, jewellery and beads from all over Africa are bought or traded here.

Cocoloco Beach

Sea turtles and exotic birds are regular visitors to this picturesque beach, where you can camp or stay in surrounding bungalows.

Castles

Elmina castle, St Jago castle and Cape coast castle are designated UNESCO World heritage sights. It is widely thought that Elmine castle, built by the Portuguese in 1491, is the oldest European structure in Africa. Walking through the castle’s dungeons serves as a solemn reminder of the atrocities of the transatlantic slave trade.

Asafotufiam festival

In late July, the people of Ada come together to celebrate the victories of its ancient warriors. The festival also celebrates the start of the new harvest season. Traditional costumes, drumming and dancing makes the event quite a spectacle!
