BUNAC Gap Year Internships Abroad – USA

Travel on a gap year to North America & take an internship in the USA - APPLCIATIONS CLOSE 31st January! Culinary Gap Year Internship Opportunity: Receive intensive career-enhancing culinary training in one of the most multicultural nations in the world. Spend 3 – 9 months living and training in a beautiful National or State Park in America.

What you'll learn?

During the internship you will learn;

* Food preparation standards and how to prepare food successfully in a fast paced kitchen environment
* Cooking skills and food serving logistics as they apply to delivering a successful product that meets high standards and satisfies clients
* More advanced cooking techniques and train more independently in the food production process.

What is included?

* A pre-screened internship or trainee position secured prior to arrival
* Competitive salary between $8.75 - $10.30 per hour
* Full visa administration, making your application process as smooth as possible
* Accommodation will be pre-arranged by host company
* 24 hour support from in-country partner organisation throughout your stay
* Health/travel insurance
* Option of one month to travel in the USA on completion of placement.

Culinary internship

Spend 3 – 9 months gaining intensive training in a hotel based in one of five national and state parks in America in either Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Virginia and Washington.

This is an excellent opportunity to receive career-enhancing formal training in advanced culinary skills. You will improve your knowledge of food preparation and cooking techniques. Learn how to succeed in a fast paced culinary environment. Rotational training is provided in gourmet food and beverage allowing you to get the most out of your experience and apply the skills that you have learnt in a real-world setting. You will be living in the amazing setting of a US National or State Park.

How long can you go for?

Internship are 3 – 9 months with varying start dates from April 2011 onwards.

Following your internship, you may stay in the US for up to 30 days – an ideal opportunity to explore all that this incredible country has to offer.

FAQ

- You will undertake your training within one of America’s national or state parks in either Arizona, Washington, Colorado, Alaska or Virginia. Your job will be based in a busy hotel/lodge.
- You will be working as part of a team with a variety of people but you may be the only intern.
- Shared accommodation will be on site or in close proximity to the hotel/lodge you will be working in.

Who can apply?

You must be at least 18 and

* current full-time degree level student OR
* recent graduate (within one year) of hospitality or culinary degrees from British or Irish university OR
* have a degree and 1 year work experience in culinary/hospitality field OR
* 5 years work experience in culinary/hospitality field

A passion for the culinary arts is essential. This is an ideal opportunity for those seeking to kick start their careers and enhance their employment prospects on their return to the UK.

The internship

This programme aims to provide interns with experiential education in the areas of food preparation and sanitation and increase their proficiency in basic kitchen techniques such as sautéing and grilling. Performance will be evaluated throughout the placement. All participants must complete a Serve Safe Food Handlers certification.

The key phases of the internship include:

* Review a detailed overview of the food preparation standards of the company and learn how to prepare food successfully and efficiently
* Introduction to events, including logistics, food service, food preparation and the importance of timing within the culinary/special events industry
* Producing meals, a la carte items, desserts etc successfully and efficiently
* Keeping the work station clean and organised during food production
* Learning how to use ovens and grill stations and the proper methods of production using these devices
* Checks for colour coordination and visual impact of all food items, both hot and cold, using appropriate garnishes where practical
* Know and comply with all company policies and procedures regarding safety, security and emergencies
