Take a gap year in Argentina, South America and learn Spanish. Buenos Aires is said to be like a European city but in South America. This is partly because most of its immigrants came from West Europe, particularly from Spain and Italy, and this resulted in an idiosyncrasy represented by a melting pot of different races that played an important role in the founding of the city.
There are typical neighbourhoods that show the marks left by the immigrants, including La Boca, on the banks of the Riachuelo, a place that maintains its Italian immigrant neighbourhood characteristics almost intact: “Caminito”, “La Vuelta de Rocha”, its vividly painted houses and the landscapes immortalized by Benito Quinquela Martín in his paintings.
Buenos Aires was born mimicking Europe, copying characteristics from both Madrid and Paris. To many, this cocktail of styles turned out better than the originals. However, Buenos Aires [B.A.] also created its own heritage, adding to the mix some sultry tangos, ubiquitous "colectivos", quaint cafés and most of all, the flair of its residents, the proud "porteños".
