Take a gap year in Australia and volunteer. The world’s attention has justifiably turned to Japan at the moment, but it’s worth remembering the terrible experiences of Queensland just a few weeks ago. In February Cyclone Yasi, a category 5 storm, hit northern Queensland with devastating consequences for homes and businesses. This came on top of Australia’s worst flooding in decades, which destroyed 35,000 homes, inundated the city of Brisbane and killed 35 people.
The priority for local people has to be repairing their homes and livelihoods, but the natural environment will need lots of repairing too. Two Oyster volunteers recently headed out to Queensland on our Australia Conservation programme. They will be spending a month with a group of other volunteers doing a variety of conservation projects around the state. We’re looking forward to hearing their stories.
Perhaps you could follow in their footsteps and help restore Australia’s damaged lands to their former beauty?
