Take a gap year in South Africa and volunteer on a wildlife project with animals. BUNAC is excited to announce a one-off opportunity for volunteers to get involved in the conservation of buffalo, giraffe, roan, sable, kudu, wildebeest, zebra and gemsbok in South Africa.
Umkwali is a cheetah conservation and research property that creates safe environments for South Africa’s amazing wildlife. It has recently established a new reserve and is developing a rehabilitation centre, and it needs your help!
The reserve has asked BUNAC to find adventurous gap year volunteers with a passion for wildlife conservation to assist in its vital research and game capturing in order to manage the species numbers at the reserve.
The animals need to be relocated to other areas or reserves, and volunteers have the opportunity to get fully involved in all aspects of the operations, including handling, transporting, and caring for the animals. Volunteers will also be involved in getting the reserve ready for the re-introduction of particular species to the region.
The project only runs once a year for 2 weeks (and volunteers will need to arrive 2 weeks earlier for orientation and training), so this is a very rare opportunity to get involved in this kind of gap year work.
Sleeping in tents on the reserve, volunteers have the opportunity to really be at one with nature – and as the project is fairly physical, gap year volunteers will need to be prepared to dive right in and get their hands dirty!
The project ONLY runs from 9th May to 10th June 2011 and applications must be in by 8th April 2011!
