Gap year volunteers needed in Australia. Floods - the restoration work continues - Since December 2010, heavy rainfall has caused a series of floods to hit Australia. As more flash flooding continues to devastate Victoria and Queensland, WAVA is drawing attention to the need for volunteers in those areas...
The major floods in Queensland and Victoria, together with the effects of a number of tropical cyclones (particularly Cyclone Yasi), gale force winds, and storm surges has caused significant and devastating environmental damage, forcing thousands of people to evacuate their homes.
At the time of WAVA's previous Australia volunteer update, their partner organisation was unable to accept any volunteers at its Conservation Programme in Australia until the situation had become more stable. WAVA can now report that volunteers are now needed... urgently.
The severe weather continued into February with flooding across western Victoria affecting 97 towns. WAVA is currently launching a flood relief programme, and has several places available for volunteers to help with recovery projects starting in the following locations:
* Melbourne (Victoria)
* Hamilton (Victoria)
* Bendigo (Victoria)
* Brisbane (Queensland)
* Townsville (Queensland)
* Cairns (Queensland)
The volunteer projects in Queensland and Victoria will start immediately, continuing throughout the year.
Australia gap year volunteers will be involved in a variety of projects - restoring fencing, planting trees, controlling erosion, track clearing, maintenance activities, seed control projects... and so on.
These gap year projects are a great opportunity for volunteers to do their bit for a major disaster relief programme in Australia.
