Gap Year Month Abroad

What is a Gap Month? A Gap Month refers to a period of time between school and university without having to take a formal gap year. It allows students to get involved in a worthwhile project through a short term volunteer placement, work experience or travel to Africa, Asia or Latin America.

A Gap Month may be particularly useful for individuals or groups who are looking to volunteer or travel but do not want to defer university. Doing a volunteer project for only one month means students can still get involved without having to take a gap year and pay increased tuition fees in 2012.

A Gap Month can be undertaken anywhere but a large number opt to take part in voluntary work abroad. A Gap Month abroad allows students to gain practical work experience, undertake a meaningful project and take part in a unique cultural exchange.

A Gap Month with Projects Abroad

Taking a Gap Month to volunteer abroad is a simple process. The application process is:

1. Call a member of Projects Abroad staff to discuss your Gap Month - 01903 708 300
2. Make a final decision about your project, destination and chosen month *
3. Submit an application with a reference and deposit
4. Receive formal confirmation from Projects Abroad
5. Receive your username and password to your pre-departure support website - this provides information on your project, accommodation, insurance, visa and in-country contacts
6. Contact our in-country staff with any questions relating to your project or trip
7. Depart for your chosen destination

*Projects last for 1 calendar month and can be undertaken at any stage e.g 15th July to 14th August constitutes a Gap Month

You can choose from a number of volunteer projects abroad: Archaeology, Building, Business, Care, Conservation & Environment, Community, Journalism, Law & Human Rights, Medicine & Healthcare, Sports, Teaching and Veterinary & Animal Care.
